Acts of violence

Every day the news is full of devastation and loss.

How could anyone not be afraid when it seems no one is immune to the violence that surrounds us?

A suicide bomber . Riots. Rape. The abused wife or child…

Whether it is on a national, regional, or even personal level, acts of violence can inspire a fear so overwhelming that it threatens to paralyze us.

When we are faced with fear, we are often encouraged by being able to rely on someone else’s strength and protection.

But is there a strength and protection that is greater and more complete than any person or government?

Yes, and we find it when we turn to God.

Read His promises in the Bible to those who love Him and those He calls His children:

“So, do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” (Isaiah 41:10 NIV)

Their faith is based on this promise: “I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow—not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love.” (Romans 8:38-39 NIV)

So, are we suggesting that followers of Jesus will live lives free of suffering or pain?

Not at all.

So, if a follower of Jesus isn’t promised a life free from violence, what is the point?

The answer is found in what God does promise to those who love Him.

Freedom from fear. The comfort of His Presence. An eternity spent with Him. Peace with Him.

Jesus said to his followers, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.” (John 14:27)
