I need to deserve (or earn) it

In so many relationships, love seems to be intricately connected to our actions.

You cook a special meal for your boyfriend/girlfriend or give your mother a birthday gift. Their response?

I love you.

The connection seems even clearer when we look at this equation from the other side. You make a mistake or hurt their feelings and love seems the last thing on their mind, as anger or even hate surfaces.

We quickly learn the connection. When your actions have earned you love, that’s when you’ll receive it. When your actions/words are “unlovely” then it can feel like their love for you lessens or even disappears.

Many of us despair of ever experiencing genuine or authentic love. Maybe you were ignored, put-down, or even abused as a child so you struggle to believe that you are worthy or deserving of love.

What if the truth is that you are loved not because of what you do but because of a love that is unchangeable?

The creator of the universe, the one who has known you since before time began, loves you.

Your actions can never diminish (or increase) God’s love for you.

Consider this.

God is love.

Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love. (1 John 4:8 NIV)

God’s Love is based on who He is, not on who you are.

But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. (Romans 5:8 NIV)

Too often, love can feel conditional as we filter it through our own experiences and hurts. It is when we are face to face with the source of love, the God who defines himself as love, that our reflection or understanding of love is much closer to the truth. The truth is that despite what the world tells us, we don’t need to earn or deserve God’s love. He has already given it to us because he is love.
