Because of bad people
But does the simplicity of believing that suffering is caused by others obscure a deeper reality?
You are wounded by someone.
Suddenly the world easily divides into you and them.
Good people (like us) suffer at the hands of bad people (like them).
But what is the tipping point for someone else to be assigned to the category of “bad”?
How much goodness do you need to maintain the designation of “good”?
We have to acknowledge that people we considered to be “good” do bad things, and people we judge to be “bad” do good things.
Sometimes within our hearts, we know that we do things that would qualify us to be in the bad column.
Although outwardly we might try to draw the lines and mark the percentages so that we are safe on the side of good, deep down I think we would agree with the truth we read here:
For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard.
(Romans 3:23 NLT)
Although you might have a long list of the wonderful things you have done, even the slightest word, thought or action that goes against God, brings death as punishment for rebellion.
So what now?
The answer continues. Listen to the solution God himself has provided.
Yet God, in his grace, freely makes us right in his sight. He did this through Christ Jesus when he freed us from the penalty for our sins. For God presented Jesus as the sacrifice for sin. People are made right with God when they believe that Jesus sacrificed his life, shedding his blood.
(Romans 3:24-25a NLT)
It can be a lot to take in but there might be something within you that is ready to acknowledge this truth.
