It’s just fate

No one is immune to pain or loss. It doesn’t matter if someone is good, bad, innocent, or guilty, they will still suffer.

How does that make you feel?

I have to admit that it is more than a little depressing.

The way we feel cannot change the truth, but it can keep us questioning when we are dissatisfied with the thought that we suffer because that’s just the way things are and that there is no escape or solution.

But why?

Is anyone in charge?

Does anyone notice what’s happening?

For those of us who are desperately unhappy with the thought that suffering is random without any reason or order, we have to consider the alternative.

What if there is a plan?

What if the plan is so far-reaching that it dwarfs today’s struggles?

What if the Planner is not only outside of time and totally aware but also completely powerful and defines himself as the absolute definition of love?

What if the reality that there is someone in charge is less a story of us being moved like pawns on a chessboard and more like being guided through a dangerous stretch of forest until we arrive safely on the other side?

These few words aren’t nearly enough to answer every question or to address every fear, but I hope they are enough to encourage you to dig for the truth and ask the hard questions.

Because if you were the Planner and the people you created totally misunderstood your motivation, and even doubted your love for them, wouldn’t you be quick to respond when they asked, “God, are you really there?” or “God, is it possible you really love me?”

I think you would and that even this exchange, right now, is part of his answer.

“Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will hear you. You will seek me and find me, when you seek me with all your heart. I will be found by you, declares the Lord…”
(Jeremiah 29:12-14a ESV)
